From the moment Don worked for Oberon, he felt as if he was in another world; an environment where the editors were friendly, communicative and appreciative of his work. Don enjoyed his contact with these editors and the other creators on Eppo. Some of these friendships lasted until the end of his life. At comic conventions he was welcomed with an enthusiasm usually reserved for movie-stars, and in 1982 the Don Lawrence Fanclub was founded in Holland. He won impressive awards like the SF Award of Michel Deligne, the Stripschappenning, Gouden Bommel and finally, in 1994, he received the Stripschapprijs.

In 2003 Don Lawrence received the ultimate token of appreciation when he was awarded a Knighthood in the Order of Oranje Nassau, a Dutch royal decoration.
